As I eat my Dannon yogurt . . .

Last week, Cam Newton opened his mouth and let some sexist crap fly out toward a woman sports reporter in a press conference and the world lost their minds! The NFL released a statement, condemning Newton’s comments as well. “The comments are just plain wrong and disrespectful to the exceptional female reporters and all journalists who cover our league. They do not reflect the thinking of the league,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in the statement. White women tweeted up a storm! Dannon Yogurt cut ties with Read more here: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/local/article177078141.html#storylink=cpy How dare the face of the Carolina Panthers say something sexist to a reporter? Cause it's not like he has done this before. Picture it, 2012, Cam and the Carolina Panthers lose another close game. It's been like this all season. A black woman sports reporter asks Cam what is he going to get the offense ready to win the close games. Cam's reply? “I’m going t...

The Battle of the Supermen: Cam and RGIII

Image
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton celebrates touchdowns by peeling back an imaginary shirt and revealing a "S" on his chest. This move cause fans to cheer --when the Cats are winning--and it makes Newton a target. Remember the Hello Kitty cartoon from the Charlotte Observer? As the season came to an end for the Panthers, Newton was rather Super . He made history. He's the first player in NFL history to throw for over 250 yards, rush for 100, toss a touchdown pass and rush for one.  EVER. And, Newton beat the Washington Redskins in week nine. That was the same week that Robert Griffin III was interviewed by the NFL Network and said, he didn't want to be compared to Newton -- although at the time, the two had a lot in common.RGII was breaking records, ironically set by Newton in his rookie season. But in the head to head match up, Newton was the only one to toss for a touchdown. But RGIII, as a rookie, did what Cam couldn't do. He led his team t...

In my Denny Green voice: Cam Newton is who we thought he was

Image
Sunday, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was Superman. He made history. He's the first player in NFL history to throw for over 250 yards, rush for 100, toss a touchdown pass and rush for one.  EVER. Oh and he scrambled for 72 against the best team in the NFL to get a touchdown. Watch it here . Superman indeed. Newton has been criticized a lot this season, some of it deserved. But this is the Cam folks have been waiting to see. The player who makes plays. (If I called him the playmaker, I think Michael Irvin would sue me.) After the game, Newton who is from Atlanta, said this game was personal and now when he goes back to the A, he can have a chip on his shoulder. Newton can be some what happy with his play of late --after all the Panthers aren't going to the post season --- but he has shown maturity as a QB. In his last four games, 11 touchdowns and no INTs. Panthers fans, this may be the start of something good--next season.

Panthers want fans to hold on. . .but to what?

Image
The Carolina Panthers are 2-7. Not the team that boasted they'd win the Super Bowl in July. The guy who took out the ad in The Charlotte Observer is on IR now. And after Sunday's loss--36-14--the Panthers want fans to " hold on " like Sam and Dave? Defensive tackle Frank Kearse said the Panthers are going to work to put things back on track and get better. “We need to work better as a team and close these games out,” he said. Tight end Greg Olsen called the loss frustrating. “You got to play well and hope the chips fall where they may,” he said. “We didn’t give ourselves a chance.” The Panthers also don’t have a chance at a postseason, despite high hopes at the beginning of training camp. Newton said the offense has to get better and he needs to get the ball out faster to help move things along. He stopped short of complaining about the pounding he took Sunday because of the lack of protection. “That’s the same offensive line that has done great thin...

What YOU don't understand about being a woman sports writer

Image
When you pick up the newspaper and read the sports section or log on to your favorite sports web site, most of y'all don't notice the byline. You're reading the story about your favorite team or player. You want to celebrate the win, bemoan the loss or just get mad because you don't like what was written. Then you look at the byline. That's when you leave your comments -- as you have the right to do --and if the author is a woman, some how her sex is always in the mix. Of course, sports is rocket science and how in the world can a woman grasp it? It's one thing for readers to "diss" a woman who covers sports. Most readers will hate what anyone who doesn't fawn over their favorite team says. On the other hand, having a "professional" athlete call you sweetheart in a press conference because you asked a football question -- that's just sexist, immature and offensive. Let me tell you something about the "sweetheart" Ca...

No one seems to know what's wrong with the Carolina Panthers, sweetheart

Image
Update: Charlotte Observer columnist Scott Fowler wrote about Cam calling a "female reporter" a sweetheart in a public forum.  Newton sounded as frustrated afterward as he ever has following a loss, and that’s saying a good bit. The final question of his press conference was posed by a female reporter, asking him what the Panthers could do to score more points. “I’m going to leave this room and I’m going to bring in a suggestion box and I want your suggestions to be in that suggestion box because I sure don’t know,” Newton said. “I really don’t. I wish I could tell you. But the only thing I control, sweetheart, is myself. Offensively, I am the leader of this bunch and we haven’t been getting the job done.” Calling a female reporter “sweetheart” isn’t a good idea in a public forum, even in jest.
