Romancing the Big Easy: Romance Slam Jam 2014

Two things I learned about New Orleans this past week. I love that city. And I will never drive there again. Even with the help of Erica Singleton and Mr. Harris the Travel Monkey, Cheris is not as young as she used to be.

But it was worth it. Oh, it was work it. The last Slam Jam I attended was in 2004. I know, I should be ashamed of myself. This year's event was just spectacular. Farrah Rochon, Sheila Goss and Kim Knight but together a flawless event. And the second line after the Emma Awards! Just amazing.

On Day 1, you calmly walked over, sat in the chair next to me, and struck up a conversation like we've known each other for years. I glanced at your name tag and was immediately star struck. Why? Because authors are my rock stars. Most literate people can write, but not everyone can craft and publish well-written stories after stories. Anyway, I'm sorry I didn't take a picture with you, but I'm sure I'll get another chance. It was nice meeting you Cheris!

I loved the Big Easy and meeting Cheris for the first time (even thought I butcher her name..LOL) It was Fan-tastic. Cannot wait until RSJ in Dallas. Great interview with LaSonde :-)

Django Unchained or The live version of Catcher Freeman

Forget what Spike Lee has to say about Django Unchained , I want to know if Aaron McGruder recognized his work on the big screen. After reading what Quentin Tarantino said about Roots , I had plans to sit this one out. Then I got an invite to see it.  Tarantino called out Roots as inauthentic as a part of his battle with Lee, who accurately said Django was disrespectful to his ancestors. About ten minutes into this overly long spaghetti western/blaxplotation flick, I wanted to make a tee shirt that would read, SPIKE WAS RIGHT.  Tarantino should've made a western with a black hero -- the slavery aspect of the movie was just so unnecessary. Granted, this movie is a work of fiction and not based on any historical slavery story. And yes, people go to the movies to be entertained, but overly violent movies aren't entertaining to me. Five Questions with Judy Lynn Hubbard, author of These Arms of Mine

Twitter is a great place to meet new authors. That's where I met Kimani author Judy Lynn Hubbard. I knew she was cool because she's a Dallas Cowboys fan! Then she shared an excerpt from her debut novel, These Arms of Mine . It left me wanting more and more. Thankfully, the wait is almost over! Hubbard's book is set to be released on January 24. When did you decide to write romance?      When I was 14, my sister gave me my first Harlequin Romance novel to read and since then I knew one day I wanted to write a book for Harlequin.
