The FIRST CHARLOTTE BOOK FAIR AND MORE IN HISTORIC WESLEY HEIGHTS
     Promoting literacy is the goal of this new, open-to-the-public fun family event

CHARLOTTE – The first  Charlotte Book Fair kicks off early on Saturday Oct. 6, the brainchild of a group that came together months ago with the goal of promoting literacy in the community in a fun and welcoming environment. The Wadsworth Estate and the streets of the Historic Wesley Heights neighborhood will be transformed into a literacy incubator for Charlotte.

The free, open-the-public fair will be an all-day family-centered event, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., at 400 South Summit Avenue.

With the theme “The Joy and Benefits of Reading -- Embrace the Possibilities,” the Charlotte Book Fair will feature presentations, books, authors, storytellers, spoken-word artists, workshops, performances, food vendors, merchants and more.

Artist Tommie Robinson will present a “Literacy through Art” program. Robinson, who has been commissioned for both corporate and public artworks including murals at Time Warner Cable Arena, was awarded the 2011 Harvey B. Gantt Center Legacy Award for his contribution to the Charlotte community through art.

Featured book fair writers will include Cheris Hodges, Charlotte-based author of 13 romance novels, offering a workshop on writing and marketing your work, and Janice Curtis Greene, known as Janice the Griot, a children’s book author and nationally known story teller.

In the Charlotte community, the school system as well as nonprofits and community foundations are coming together to support students in closing the achievement gap and making the most of their educational experience. The decline of literacy is a challenge for the entire community -- not just a problem of the student population. Many cannot remember the last time they enjoyed the adventure and excitement of holding and reading a book, an essential element for fostering imagination, innovation and creativity.

"Reading is the foundation to insight, career, dreams and vision,” said Mack Staton, a professor of English at Johnson C. Smith University and chairman of the program committee for the Charlotte Book Fair.

Django Unchained or The live version of Catcher Freeman

Forget what Spike Lee has to say about Django Unchained , I want to know if Aaron McGruder recognized his work on the big screen. After reading what Quentin Tarantino said about Roots , I had plans to sit this one out. Then I got an invite to see it.  Tarantino called out Roots as inauthentic as a part of his battle with Lee, who accurately said Django was disrespectful to his ancestors. About ten minutes into this overly long spaghetti western/blaxplotation flick, I wanted to make a tee shirt that would read, SPIKE WAS RIGHT.  Tarantino should've made a western with a black hero -- the slavery aspect of the movie was just so unnecessary. Granted, this movie is a work of fiction and not based on any historical slavery story. And yes, people go to the movies to be entertained, but overly violent movies aren't entertaining to me. We can be so petty

Sixteen year old Gabby Douglas won a gold medal in the London Olympics. She's the first African American to ever, EVER, win gold in the all around gymnastics. And you petty people are talking about her hair? And when I say YOU PEOPLE, I'm looking at the media. The Huffington Post : I really thought you all were more progressive than this. I guess your progression stops at the African American hairline. The New York Times points out how people weren't happy for Gabby. It kind of only matters that her mother, her beautiful mother, was over the moon proud of her child. And at the end of the day -- this is all that matters: Douglas, a 16-year-old who left her Virginia Beach, Va., home and her family when she was 14 so she could train and learn better gymnastics in Iowa, won the Olympic gold medal Thursday at the North Greenwich Arena.
