This summer, Kianna Alexander is turning up the heat with Freedom's Embrace. This is a story that she believed in. And now, Ellora's Cave is releasing it this summer. August 1, to be exact.

When Kianna visited the blog earlier in May, this is what she said about the journey to get her novel published.

I was having a very hard time selling a story very near and dear to my heart, about a runaway slave and a quadroon doctor in the late 1840's. Five or six publishers had rejected it and I was about to tuck it away under my bed, never to be seen again. I felt this book needed and deserved the broader audience a publishing house could provide, so I didn't want to self publish it. I was at the end of my rope. Beverly Jenkins told me to write the book of my heart, and everything else would fall into place. Sure enough, I sold it when an editor finally saw my vision. It's now titled Freedom's Embrace, and is coming this summer from Ellora's Cave.
Here's what Freedom's Embrace  is all about:

Jonathan is the only doctor within several days’ ride of Graham, Pennsylvania, and is desperate for a nurse to assist him. His salvation comes in the form of Naomi, a runaway slave who shows up ill on his doorstep. When she agrees to be his nurse in exchange for treatment, his world lights up. Unfortunately, not everyone in town approves of Jonathan’s new nurse. His mother and some of his patients express their distaste for her, but she’s captured Jonathan’s heart, and he’ll defend her at any cost.
When Naomi’s former master rides into town, Jonathan discovers just how far he will go to keep the woman he loves from being torn from his arms, and from freedom’s embrace.

Django Unchained or The live version of Catcher Freeman

Forget what Spike Lee has to say about Django Unchained , I want to know if Aaron McGruder recognized his work on the big screen. After reading what Quentin Tarantino said about Roots , I had plans to sit this one out. Then I got an invite to see it.  Tarantino called out Roots as inauthentic as a part of his battle with Lee, who accurately said Django was disrespectful to his ancestors. About ten minutes into this overly long spaghetti western/blaxplotation flick, I wanted to make a tee shirt that would read, SPIKE WAS RIGHT.  Tarantino should've made a western with a black hero -- the slavery aspect of the movie was just so unnecessary. Granted, this movie is a work of fiction and not based on any historical slavery story. And yes, people go to the movies to be entertained, but overly violent movies aren't entertaining to me. We can be so petty

Sixteen year old Gabby Douglas won a gold medal in the London Olympics. She's the first African American to ever, EVER, win gold in the all around gymnastics. And you petty people are talking about her hair? And when I say YOU PEOPLE, I'm looking at the media. The Huffington Post : I really thought you all were more progressive than this. I guess your progression stops at the African American hairline. The New York Times points out how people weren't happy for Gabby. It kind of only matters that her mother, her beautiful mother, was over the moon proud of her child. And at the end of the day -- this is all that matters: Douglas, a 16-year-old who left her Virginia Beach, Va., home and her family when she was 14 so she could train and learn better gymnastics in Iowa, won the Olympic gold medal Thursday at the North Greenwich Arena.
